Students must have completed at least 18 credit hours before they can enroll in practicum.

Students should begin the process of looking for a practicum site the semester before they plan to enroll in Practicum.  Practicum is a minimum of 120 clock hours for Data Science students.

Steps for enrollment in the Data Science practicum/internship course

  • Step 2: Receive an offer letter from internship site.
  • Step 3:  Fill out the practicum application form.  The form needs to include the name and contact information of the individual that will be directly supervising the student at their practicum location. Once the form is received your requested site will be reviewed and the requested supervisor will be contacted by the Data Science department.
    • Practicum site locations go through a vetting process and must be approved by the Data Science department.
  • Step 4:  Submit your practicum proposal (PDF) and Offer letter in an e-mail to Dr. Stephen Wheeler and copy (CC) LIS-Practicum@unt.edu on the email.
  • Step 5: Wait for a decision on both your practicum site application and practicum proposal.
  • Step 6: Once the proposal and practicum application is reviewed and if both are approved, you will be given departmental permission to enroll in the appropriate course for your degree program:  INFO 5090 (or DTSC 5091) for MS DS students and INFO 3901 for BS DS students.
  • Step 7: Enroll in the class through the MyUNT portal.
  • Step 8: Students on an F-1 visa must send CPT paperwork to ci-advising@unt.edu for advisor signature.  Questions about CPT must go to the UNT International Advising Office via: internationaladvising@unt.edu.
